Konstantin Raudive (1909-1974) by Thelma

Dr Konstantin Raudive was born in Uppsala, Sweden in 1909. At a young age he decided to follow his interests and went on to study Philosophy, psychology and history of literature in Scotland, England, Spain, France, Germany and Switzerland. He also began teaching at the University of Riga and also worked for a Latvian newspaper as an editor.

It was in 1965 while he was in Switzerland that Raudive heard about Friedrich Jurgenson’s work with electronic voice recordings from the dead. He, along with his wife, Dr Zenta Maurina, began working with Jurgenson on the research of this strange phenomenon. It was sometime after 1969 that Raudive and his wife went on to conduct their own investigations and studies after having a difference of opinion with Jurgenson.

With the assistance of physicist Alex Schneider, they took Jurgenson’s simple methods of a microphone and radio receiver and developed the idea of inputting the radio receiver directly into the end of a tape recorder. He began to experiment his ideas in a controlled environment. He believed that the energy used to record these unexplained voices were too weak on their own. His research lead him to use stochastic resonance, which is the use of background noise (white noise), to amplify the energy to help the voices come through more clearly.

Many questioned the strange voice recordings and came up with different explanations such as voices from other planets being relayed to earth by some natural occurrence, or that they were strictly imaginary. This term for this is called matrixing which is used when the brain tries to make something familiar from unfamiliar sights or sounds. Others believed it could have had something to do with the subconscious mind. But countless research and experiments that showed these unexplained voices imprinted on magnetic recordings had many convinced that they were voices from beyond.

In all of his years of research, Dr. Raudavie recorded over 100,000 evps which he published in a book called “Inaudible Become Audible”. He passed away in 1974.
