Background of Mt. Misery:

One of Long Island’s well known urban legends is that if Mt. Misery in Huntington. Deep within the woods of the West Hills Park area stem quite a few myths and urban legends. One legend is that of an ancient curse set upon the land by its earliest inhabitants, the Matinnecock Indians. They had felt cheated by the “white man” when the land was purchased and placed a curse on it. Another story is that of a hospital in the mid to late 1700's that housed the insane that burned down due to a patient setting it on fire. Years later it was rebuilt and it mysteriously burned down again. It was rebuilt once more and used as a Military Hospital but so far no records of any of these hospitals existing have been found. Some say at night you can see the girl that burned down the hospital in her white gown walking in the woods. Others claim to have seen the “burning specters” of the victims that perished in the fire as well as hearing the moans and screams. There’s also a story about a homeless man walking in the woods holding a basket full of severed heads. Other stories are of people having encountered hell hounds, sighting of men in black, UFOs and the Mothman.

The Investigation:

Having arrived shortly after 9pm, LIPRI had a brief safety meeting and equipment check. From there, they began to walk the trail as Lead Investigator Thelma began to recant the several known legends of Mt. Misery. During this time, investigators were taking readings with various EMF detectors, ambiant thermometers, taking digital photos, while also recording video and audio. Once they hit their location for EVP session 1, the group gathered as Thelma began to start the EVP session. Several questions in, a few of the investigators had some personal experiences, which unfortunately, can’t be considered evidence. One of the personal experiences was when Thelma turned towards the team and thought she saw the top of a young girl’s head standing between her and one of the other investigators. It was a quick flash that was there and then it disappeared. Lisa also experienced a sudden feeling of high anxiety (like on the verge of a panic attack) which dissipated as quickly as it had come. As the EVP session ended, they continued on the trail getting several spikes on the Digital EMF detector. While there are no known sources for random EMF spikes ranging between .1 to 2.5mG, the relative humidity was above 80% which could cause the Digital EMF detector to give inaccurate readings. Unfortunately, the investigation was short lived as others started arriving at the location.

Conclusion:

EMF: The digital EMF detector had spiked on several occasions a couple of times, due to the humidity being over 80%, the readings had to be dismissed. We also keep in mind that there is a nearby radio tower.

Photos: There is 1 questionable photo that shows a mist across the path, but unfortunately due to the high humidity it can’t be considered evidence.

Audio: Nothing to report.
