Mt. Misery

One of Long Island’s well known urban legends is that if Mt. Misery in Huntington. Deep within the woods of the West Hills Park area stem quite a few myths and urban legends.

One legend is that of an ancient curse set upon the land by its earliest inhabitants, the Matinnecock Indians. The land was purchased from the Matinnecock chief Raseokan in the mid 1600's by the white. At the time the Matinnecock didn’t understand the concept of owning land. There territory was originally called Katanomocke. All deeds were confirmed by Wyandance, Chief of the Montauks. He was considered one of the most powerful of the Native American chiefs on Long Island. The first purchase was made in 1641 and the price paid was land was thirty needles, six hatchets, six shovels, six coats, six bottles, thirty eel spears, ten fathoms of wampum and then knives. It is stated in the History of the original Township of Huntington that the Indians were cheated by the whites. It’s because of this that many feel that the land was cursed.

Another story is that of an insane asylum in the mid to late 1700's that was burned down by a patient due to the harsh treatments that patients had to undergo. Years later it was rebuilt and, again, burned down but this time under mysterious circumstances. It was rebuilt once more and, rumor had it that it was used as a Black Ops Military Hospital. Unfortunately no records of any of these hospitals existing have been found… yet. Some say at night you can see the girl that burned down the hospital in her white gown walking in the woods. Others claim to have seen the “burning specters” of the victims that perished in the fire as well as hearing the moans and screams.

Many residents claimed that the woods have been used by witches and Satan worshippers to do their rituals. There have been claims of a pack of monstrous black dogs with red eyes chasing people through the woods as well as the sounds of chanting in a strange language being heard. Some evidence of ritual work has been found by many people such as pentagrams painted on trees, strange rock circles and even a big pentagram made of rocks.

There are also stories of a homeless man walking in the woods holding a basket full of severed heads holding a machete, sightings of Men in Black, UFOs and the Mothman.

Please keep in mind, if you do decide to wander off into the woods in this area to take precautions as residents have claimed to have witnessed gang related activity. Safety is the most important thing!
