Dating as far back as 1943 with the Philadelphia Experiment, the Montauk Project is widely debated amongst conspiracy theory enthusiasts, government agencies and skeptics on both sides. Although there is no denial that a military base existed, unlike our friends in the southwest, Camp Hero/Montauk Air Force Base has become the center of questionable activity starting in the 1960’s. It is said that the U.S. government conducted a series of secret projects at Camp Hero for the purpose of developing psychological warfare techniques including time travel. Some believe the projects were a continuation of the failed Philadelphia experiment (1943, Philadelphia Naval Yard).
Between 1967-1968, the U.S. military built a deep underground base underneath Montauk Air Force base. In 1969, the Montauk Air Force Base was officially closed and donated as a wildlife refuge/park to protect the project, as operations continued underground, protected as property of the U.S. Air Force.
This project originally began at Brookhaven National Lab under the name the “Phoenix Project,” and moved to Montauk as the base already had a large, advanced radar dish. It is said that even today, experiments and projects involving time travel are still conducted today, underground at the Camp Hero site. Camp Hero National Park has been open to the public for several years, however, public access to the old military building is prohibited.
Reports have come about with claims from people hiking in the wooded areas around Camp Hero of guards suddenly appearing and chasing them out with loaded weapons. Some have even reported being shot at. Although no members in LIPRI have been able to document such claims, we strongly urge you to use extreme caution, should you choose to investigate this area. Many people are interested in researching and discovering something like this, but we cannot condone or promote any sort of trespassing onto government property.
The Montauk Project, whether real or urban legend is indeed intriguing. LIPRI continues to investigate claims and research leads.
